Gambling Losses are reported on Form 1040 Schedule A as a Miscellaneous itemized deduction. Gambling losses are not a one-for-one reduction in winnings. If you itemize your deductions, you can deduct your gambling losses for the year on Schedule A. However, you can only deduct your loss up to the amount you report as gambling winnings. So, you should keep: An accurate diary of your gambling winnings and losses; Documentation of your gambling activity that can be verified.

Tax Limit On Gambling Winnings

  • The Tax rate for 'Other' columns - line 1 under Foreign > 1040NR > section 4 will be the rates for column d Other (specify) on the 1040NR Pg 4.
  • The gains calculated on 1040NR page 4 line 18 will carry to line 9 column A - D.
    • According to the rate entered on Foreign > 1040NR > section 4 line 18.
  • If the rate entered on Foreign > 1040NR > section 4 line 18 does not match one of the rates on column a - d than line 9 will be blank.
    • The inputs below will override the amount calculated for line 9.
  • The above boxes will flow to line 10a and 10b.
    • It will total them on line 10c.
    • If the losses are more than line 10c will result in a zero.
  • If a loss the amount will show as a zero.
    • If the amount results in a gain than it will apear on line 9 in the appropriate rate column.
  • The gain will need to be entered on the Sch D input forms i.e. D-1 to flow to the capital gain line 13 on the 1040 or 1040NR Pg 1-2.
